Our trek was organized by Rob Kolber, who runs SponsorTrek in Holland. SponsorTrek is a charitable organization, which combines a wonderful trekking experience with the sponsorship of health posts and schools in Nepal. The typical cost of a trek with them is 40 Euros per day. In addition, each guest contributes $200 which goes directly to the health posts.
Sometimes a western doctor is present on the trek. The doctor visits health posts on the trail, and gives medicine, equipment and advice to them. Most of the trekkers are Dutch, but English is often spoken, especially to the trekking crew and other Nepalese. I was their first non-Dutch guest in the spring of 1996, and got along well in English.
The treks vary between easy walks and strenuous climbing expeditions. They last between 15 and 28 days. Please see Current Program for SponsorTrek's current trek offerings.
The number of days include one travel day from Kathmandu at the start of the trek, and one travel day at the end. "Strenuous" means 7 hour days with lots of ups and downs (typically 700m up and down per day), and are for those people used to non-technical walking in the mountains. "Climbing" means the trek will have some technical climbing at the destination, typically a 6000m trekking peak, and guests should have some mountaineering experience.
The prices given are per person in Euros, and depend upon the group size (prices for 2, 4 and 10-person groups are given above). Prices do not include air travel to Kathmandu, or living expenses in Kathmandu. In addition, a donation of $200 per person which is given to Nepal's Health Posts and Schools is recommended.
Trekkers from North America are encouraged to form their own groups, then let Rob Kolber do the organization. You can reach Rob Kolber at +31 299 690460 (tel/fax) or e-mail at Rob Kolber or SponsorTrek's web site.
